                High & Mighty Brass Band

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The High & Mighty Brass Band is a Brooklyn NY based band that reeks of authentic New Orleans style.  We have one word to describe them, just one: FUN.  These guys (and an amazingly flirtatious girl) have fun every second that they are playing and we defy anyone not to have fun watching them (or to stand still).  Highly recommended to see live.

THE ORWELLS

The Orwells had fans literally climbing the walls (or the scaffolds) and rushing the gates as one of the smallest stages at Bonnaroo struggled to contain their energy and their rabid fans.  It's not too much of a stretch to say that front man Mario Cuomo was jimmorrisonesque as he fed off the craziness and transcended the Tennessee sun.  These guys just graduated last year (from high school in Elmhurst, Illinois) to critical acclaim at Lollapalooza, and graduate again this year as the young rockers had a legendary showing on David Letterman - see the Rolling Stone article at (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/the-orwells-react-to-instantly-infamous-letterman-performance-20140116).  Their set was truly "a thing".  When fans climbed up on top of the scaffolding and bounced around 20 feet off the ground on the fabric ceiling like it was a trampoline, you had the feeling something really bad was going to happen, but security got them down safely and only good things continued unfettered.  Look for them on at least the Which Stage next year.

Skinny Lister

Skinny Lister is a 6-piece folk group from the UK.  Their perfomance in a small tent in Bonnaroo was energetic and fun, and featured what appears to be a staple of their performances - crowd surfing while playing huge instruments.  The upright bass player and the drummer were passed around overhead by the enthusiastic crowd while not only hanging onto the bass and a huge drum, but actually continuing to play - it was pretty cool.

THE ORWELLS

The Orwells graduated last year (from high school in Elmhurst, Illinois) to critical acclaim at Lollapalooza, and graduate again this year as the young rockers had a legendary showing on David Letterman - see the Rolling Stone article at (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/the-orwells-react-to-instantly-infamous-letterman-performance-20140116) and will become featured performers at RiotFest and Bonnaroo among other notable performances scheduled throughout the year.

Tedeschi Trucks Band was formed a few years ago when the legendary guitar demigod Derek Trucks (Allman Brothers, his own band) and wife Susan Tedeschi (a talented blues guitar player who has graced the stage with Buddy Guy and many other guitar virtousos) merged their seperate and talented bands together to form a true super group.  Look for them on the farm at Bonnaroo this summer.  Their live album version of "Midnight in Harlem" is an absolute gem.

We Were Promised JetPacks, Anders Osborne, Loundon Wainwright III 3.5.14

Our mission is simpleEvery week, we feature 3 bands that matterEnjoy.

March 5, 2014

We Were Promised Jetpacks is a futuristic-named Scottish band with a lush and simple sound.  You know how when you hear British guys singing, they don't seem to have accents?  Well these guys sure do...they sound like young Sean Connery's or Groundskeeper Willies.  Their songs grow on you over time, like we said, simple, but somehow haunting and comforting.

 Anders Osborne

Anders Osborne is a Swedish-born American musician based in New Orleans.  He's got a real joy of performing and is on the road constantly.  A tiny bit of Greg Allman mixed with a rich gumbo of Nawlins influences...Anders is one of the city's unique talents.

_____________________________________________________________________                 Loudon Wainwright III poses with his 2010 Grammy for "High Wide & Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project."
                  -------------------------------------------------------------------

Loudon Wainwright III may be America's most introspective singer-songwriter.  To listen to his catalog of albums is to feel like you know the man.  While the stories he sings can't all be true, certainly a lot of them are.  You hear about the birth and rearing and estrangement of his children (including accomplished performer Rufus Wainwright and sort-of accomplished performer Martha Wainwright), his many loves and conquests, his feelings for his other family members and the grim reality of aging.  If Joni Mitchell was a guy (and not Canadian), and Bob Dylan had never been born, LWIII would likely be America's best known folk artist.  Instead he's just our most accomplished.  He's been wagging his tongue around since Michael Jordan was dribbling formula instead of a basketball, and his humor, stage presence and biting wit is more entertaining than his voice.  Catch Loudo and catch a half century of American music history.

 Mat. McHugh

Australia's answer to Jack Johnson or maybe Donavon Frankenreiter, former The Beautiful Girls frontman Mat. McHugh blends luscious laid back, hauntingly simple salt water infused melodies, sometimes drizzled with a bit of Jamaican influence or some hip-hop into a rich delicacy of fresh sounding surf songs.

Davy Knowles - Blues Rock Musician

Davy Knowles, formerly front man for Back Door Slam, is just another accomplished young electric blues musician from the Isle of Man...wait I guess he may be the only one.  We didn't even know where the Isle of Man is, (close to Ireland), but had to look it up immediately after tripping across Davy the first time.  This guy can shred it, and his powerful, blues infused guitar playing matches his soulful and powerful (there's that word again - sensing a theme?) bluesy vocals perfectly.  Anybody chosen to open for Buddy Guy and Jeff Beck when barely out of their teens is worth checking out.

  Melvin Taylor

Melvin Taylor is the best selling blues artist on his label, which means not many people have heard him, 'cause blues albums don't sell so well here in the US.  Playing at Rosa's Lounge infrequently now, but regularly for around 30 years, Melvin draws big in Chicago and throughout Europe.  When his hands are flying around his guitar you can hardly see 'em they move so fast.  He's an engaging and showy guitar player, playing mostly blues standards and soul covers with an intensity that needs to be seen to be believed.

Trigger Hippy, Snarky Pupppy, and Shovels & Rope 2/19/14

 Snarky Puppy

Snarky Puppy is nothing if not precise.  We are huge fans of improvisational jam bands like Umphrey's McGee who weave jazz elements into original rock songs and covers together and you're never quite sure where they're going to go, but there's something to be said about a tight, precise sound like Snarky Puppy brings.  Fusing jazzy horns and lead by their bassist, their primarily instrumental songs are so crisp it's hard to believe you're seeing them perform live.   Often accompanied by soulful guest singers, not only do they have one of the greatest band names in recent years, they are really great to hear.  Have some iced tea or something before they play so your ears are in prime condition to process their complex and shall we say...precise, music.

 Shovels & Rope

This is likely the first husband and wife duo we've featured on 3Bands.com.  Shovels & Rope hail from the low country of Charleston, SC, one of America's iconic towns.  Their edgy folky harmonies and clever lyrics make them an act not to miss.

      Trigger Hippy

Trigger Hippy is a throwback to the era of the true supergroups. Made up of the incomparable Joan Osborne on lyrics (pipes like you can't believe), and Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman, with Jackie Greene, Tom Bukovac, and Nick Gorvik, they describe themselves as a powerful, soul-infused rock and roll band and that sums it up nicely.  Joan has sung with a virtual who's who of the most influential bands of the last 20 years, (her cover of the Stone's Gimme Shelter which seemed to be a spontaneous reaction to the skies opening up and pouring on the fans during the closing night at Bonnaroo with the Grateful Dead's Phil Lesch's band several years ago ranks among the most legendary peformances ever).

Gogol Bordello, Tim Fite, Red Elvises 2.12.14

Our mission is simpleEvery week, we feature 3 bands that matterEnjoy.

    February 12, 2014

This week we're doing something a lil' different - no risk, no reward.  (We're putting whatever nascent 'cred we have at risk, but check these artists out live for a reward).

Our featured 3 bands are awesome acts to see live...but, the experience is more about the visual presentation, energy, and wit.  In other words, these are bands we will go see again (and again, and again), but we never listen to unless we're seeing them in person.
    ______________________________________________________

     Gogol Bordello

Nobody brings the energy like Gogol Bordello...festival favorites around the world.  Their stage is alive with musicians and color and sounds.  Front man Eugene Hütz is of Russian and Romanian descent and has lived and played in many different parts of the world.  Currently based in Brooklyn, this band has got to be seen to be believed.  We've seen 'em at Bonnaroo, and Mumford & Sons' Gentlemen of the Road Stopover tour, and their performances were highlights of both festivals.  Much of their music is influenced by gypsy tunes.  Highly recommended live experience.

        Tim Fite

This guy Tim Fite is someone you should see.  Yes, this guy.  When he first comes on stage, you might think you're in the wrong place, (or more likely, that he is in the wrong place).  His music is weird, he dresses funny, he creates strange illustrations that he projects behind him, and his humor is well...quirky.  He describes his physical artwork as "funny, but a little dirty, a little weird". He's put out country albums, hip-hop, and even alternative, but he's not really defined by his music, he's more like a performance artist.  Whatever the hell he is, he's entertaining; there's literally nobody like him.  His music and style is not derivative of anyone else - he's a true original.  You might not buy his CD, but you won't forget seeing him.

      Red Elvises

Quick, name another band lead by a guy named Igor.  The Red Elvises describe their music as Siberian Surf Music and that's as good a description as any.  Russian born Igor began playing on the streets of Santa Monica, and quickly launched a worldwide tour that's been going strong for almost 20 years.  Colorful and intentionally awkward, this band has a rotating cast of characters but always delivers a highly energetic, fun performance to dance and drink to.  (You'd better be drinking when you see these guys...)

      Kermit Ruffins

Kermit Ruffins is arguably THE musical face of New Orleans, America's most musical city.  His passion for the city and his charisma overflow every performance.  You can catch him all around The Big Easy and you'll enjoy any venue he plays at.  Forget Bourbon Street, follow Kermit's trumpet to Frenchmen Street, or the Treme, or....   Speaking of Treme, Kermit has been a star of the outstanding HBO series by the same name - check it out to get the feel for the people who make the city what it is.
      -------------------------------------------------------------------

     Tea Leaf Green

Over the years we heard that Phish was the next Grateful Dead, and Umphrey's McGee was the next Phish...well Tea Leaf Green may be the next Umphrey's - in America's never-ending search for the greatest jam band.  Festival favorites, road warriors, TLG brings the improvisational energy to every jam.
